At Dubner, the men and women who make up our team truly love what they do. It’s not just one person’s passion—it’s a shared energy that has fueled our growth from a four-man operation to a company of over 300 dedicated professionals. We are proud to count many employees who have been with us for 20, 30, and even 40 years.
History
During his college years, Steve began designing people’s gardens as a means to pay expenses. After graduating and moving back to Long Island, Steve decided to pursue the field of law. Steve began to seek out landscape opportunities in order to be able to support himself. He simultaneously attempted law school and ran a landscaping business. During that time, Steve employed three to four men on a full time basis.
Steve was amazed by the confidence people showed in him by allowing him to landscape projects at such a young age.
The company became official by happenstance. The company incorporated February 28th, 1966 only after an attorney-client insisted that Steve incorporate and delete gratis as a thank you for a job well done.
While Steve appreciated the thoughtful gesture, he said that in fact, he was not even sure he would be doing this for a long time.
The lawyer said “Steve just pick any name and I will get it done.”
Steve said. “I don’t know, I never thought about it. Steven Dubner Landscaping? I don’t know, I guess.”
After completing law school and passing the bar exams, Steve decided that he truly enjoyed working outside, meeting with people, creating a whole environment for them to enjoy. He was going to pursue what he loved.
